The Archive

The Helmut Schober Archive was established to catalogue and document the artist’s work from the 1970s to the 2020s.

Painter, sculptor and performance artist Helmut Schober worked with remarkable consistency for almost 50 years, continuously exploring new pictorial ideas.

His work has been presented in more than 30 solo exhibitions in museums and exhibition spaces. Schober was invited to documenta in Kassel in 1977 and 1987, and to the Venice Biennale in 1978 and 1986.

A recurring theme runs through the different media of his practice—from the performances of his early years and his subsequent figurative paintings to his drawings, sculptures and canvases exploring his vision of the universe: a continuous investigation into light, time and the cosmos.

His early representations of the cosmos in black and white were later followed by monochrome and polychrome pictorial compositions.
